Review: IKEA VALLHORN Motion Sensor – A Smart Upgrade from TRÅDFRI

IKEA’s smart lighting ecosystem has long been known for its simplicity and reliability. With the introduction of the VALLHORN motion sensors, IKEA has built upon the solid foundation of the previous TRÅDFRI series, offering even more functionality in a sleek, user-friendly design. In this post, I’ll break down what makes the VALLHORN sensors an attractive upgrade, along with a few areas where it could still improve.

What’s New & Better Than TRÅDFRI?

The VALLHORN isn’t just a rebrand—it’s a meaningful upgrade. It adds features that were clearly missing in the TRÅDFRI version, including a built-in lux sensor, physical configuration buttons, and IP44 water resistance. All this makes it a stronger candidate for real-world smart home use, especially in places like bathrooms, entryways, or outdoor covered areas.

No Hub Required for Basic Use

Just like its predecessor, the VALLHORN can control IKEA Zigbee lights directly without any hub. While the controls are limited, this plug-and-play behavior is still a unique feature of the IKEA smart ecosystem, perfect for users who want automation without extra complexity.

Built-in Lux Sensor

One of the most welcome additions is the lux sensor, which allows the motion sensor to intelligently detect ambient light. This enables “dark mode”, so the light will only turn on when it’s actually needed. A huge step forward from the TRÅDFRI model.

On-Device Controls

On the back of the sensor, you’ll find two simple buttons that let you choose:

  • Motion duration: 1 minute or 5 minutes
  • Dark mode toggle: Enable or disable light-only-at-night behavior

This allows for quick configuration without needing an app or hub.

Works With Most Zigbee Hubs

The VALLHORN is fully compatible with popular Zigbee hubs including: SmartThings, Amazon Alexa Zigbee Hubs, Home Assistant (via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT)

Easy Battery Replacement & Solid Battery Life

It runs on two AAA batteries, which are easy to replace – a thoughtful improvement over coin cell batteries. Battery life is rated at up to 6 months, depending on usage.

Versatile Mounting Options

Whether you want to mount it flat or angled at 45°, the included hardware makes installation flexible. This makes it easier to optimize motion detection in your space.

IP44 Rated

The IP44 rating means it’s protected against splashes and dust, making it suitable for semi-outdoor or humid environments like bathrooms or under eaves.

Negatives: Where It Falls Short

Limited Customization Without a Hub

Without a smart hub, you’re still limited to the preset duration times (1 or 5 minutes) and fixed detection sensitivity. There’s no control over motion sensitivity or detection range unless you integrate it into a Zigbee-compatible smart home platform.

Bulky Design

The VALLHORN is larger and bulkier than many other Zigbee motion sensors on the market. If space or aesthetics is a concern, this might be something to consider.

Final Thoughts

The IKEA VALLHORN motion sensor is a strong improvement over the older TRÅDFRI model. It adds essential features like a lux sensor and on-device controls, while maintaining the core benefits of affordability and easy no-hub setup. For anyone invested in IKEA’s smart lighting, this is an excellent upgrade.

If you’re already using IKEA’s smart lights, this is a no-brainer. It’s easy to set up, functional right out of the box, and integrates well with or without a smart home hub.

However, if you’re building a more advanced home automation system, or mixing brands like Aqara, Sonoff, or others, you might prefer more compact and feature-rich sensors. For instance, Aqara motion sensors offer finer granularity, better integration with platforms like Home Assistant, and more detailed sensor data-including lux readings and temperature.

The VALLHORN is a great second choice, especially if you value simplicity and don’t mind a slightly bulky form factor.

How to pair Ikea VALLHORN motion sensor to a zigbee Hub?

Press the link button 4 times and you will see the red light flashing. Now your Zigbee hub should be able to discover this device.

Can I control lights without a hub?

Yes. You can control IKEA TRÅDFRI lights directly using the VALLHORN motion sensor. This direct control is unique to IKEA’s ecosystem.

Do I need the IKEA DIRIGERA hub?

No. While the DIRIGERA hub unlocks more features, you can use any Zigbee-compatible hub. In our tests, it worked with SmartThings, Home Assistant (ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT), and Amazon Echo Zigbee hubs.

Does it work with Home Assistant?

Yes. The VALLHORN works well with both ZHA and Zigbee2MQTT (Z2M) in Home Assistant.

Can I use it with Apple HomeKit?

Yes, but only if you use the IKEA TRÅDFRI gateway (or use a third-party hubs that support HomeKit).
